Propecia is a medication that has been licensed to work for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Despite the fact that this medication is licensed, there are rumors surrounding whether or not it actually works. While this medication does work, it may not work for everyone, or for every type of baldness. So, does Propecia work?
Prior to Propecia becoming licensed in the United States, it underwent several clinical trials. One such trial focused on men who were experiencing baldness on the top of their heads. Men who used Propecia for a period of one year saw new growth for a time, but then began losing the hair again. Although they eventually lost the new hair, the rate of loss was much less than men who didn’t take Propecia.
Men who have taken Propecia for at least five years largely saw benefits as well. Half of these men had new hair growth and another 42 percent saw their hair loss stop completely. Propecia didn’t work for about ten percent of the men, who continued to experience hair loss with no new growth.
It’s important to understand that while Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern baldness, it is not going to work for everyone. Additionally, once the use of Propecia is stopped, the man will begin to lose hair again. Only certain types of male pattern baldness can be treated effectively with Propecia.
