Don’t Let Cold and Flu Get You Down

flu2Coming down with a cold or flu can be the worst thing that can happen to you, especially, when you’re the type of person who is always on the move. A cold or flu can hamper your performance at work and your daily relationship with your family because people who are sick are either short-tempered or too weak to move. Cold and flu are not of the same level but there are similarities between the two. Cold comes with a stuffy nose, a giant headache and sore throat while flu can tie you to your bed for a week or so because it is associated with fever, muscle aches and can even lead to pneumonia.

A cold or flu is caused by viruses. A common virus in cold is the rhinovirus and among the common viruses, influenza is the worst of them all. Each virus comes with a season. Rhinovirus is prevalent during late summer while influenza is common during winter. Children are most prone to cold since they mingle with a lot of more children. Women are also more prone to cold than men because of their constant contact with children. The virus enters our body through our nose and mouth and being near to someone with cold can make us catch the disease. Through talking, coughing and sneezing, the virus is spread through the air.

Practicing good hygiene can prevent occurrence of cold and flu. Frequent washing of hands can eliminate viruses that you have contacted through touching infected people’s stuff. Carrying hand gels is also very important for immediate cleaning when there’s no water and soap around. Clean surfaces with disinfectant when someone in the family has a cold. When you’re the one sick, cover your mouth with a tissue when you sneeze and throw it away immediately. Don’t share utensils with people who has cold and avoid contact with sick people when you can. A flu shot can prevent you from having the flu but you’ll probably go down with a fever after the shot.

Get plenty of rest and take a lot of fluids when you’re sick. Antibiotics aren’t needed when you have a cold or flu but cough and cold medicine can do the trick. A high dose of Vitamin C can shorten the duration of cold. Zinc nasal sprays can help ease the cold but there is evidence that this can lead to permanent loss of smell so this is not really recommended. A humidifier can also help make you feel better.

§         Seafood

It is true that seafood is great source of iron, protein, and omega 3 that help in babies’ brain development. However, some of them may contain potentially harmful amount of mercury. Considerable high amount of mercury will damage the developing nervous system of the baby.

Some sea creatures that you need to avoid are swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. While shrimp, salmon, catfish, and canned tunas may be consumed, they only be at limited serving suggestively at 12 oz. per week.

§         Meat and Poultry

Pregnant women are at more risk of bacterial food poisoning than any ordinary people. Rarely, your baby may it too.

To prevent this, cook your meat and poultry properly. Avoid medium or rare cooked foods from restaurants, fast foods, or processed meat products like hotdogs, sausages, and burger patties.

§         Caffeine

Caffeine is a dangerous substance when you are conceiving. It affects the baby’s breathing and heart rate. It is also associated to some incidents of miscarriage and babies being under weight.

§         Alcohol

Just like for everyone, too much alcohol is bad for your health. If you drink alcohol, most likely it will be more than the baby can take.

Excessive alcohol drinking may lead to baby’s heart problems, mental retardation, miscarriage, and fetal alcohol syndrome.

Can HIV Be Spread Through Oral Sex?

HIVThere are lots of myths we all like to believe.  Some myths just make us feel good and believing in others allows us to do things that we really know we shouldn’t do.  Like having unprotected oral sex, because the short answer is: yes, HIV can be spread through oral sex.

Granted, the chances of contracting HIV through oral sex are not as great as the odds of getting it through vaginal or anal sex, but there are many well-documented cases of HIV being transmitted through oral sex.

It’s impossible to quantify what your chances are of contracting HIV if you engage in oral sex with a partner who is infected.  But any chance at all is too much, isn’t it?

So what can you do?  The only sure-fire way to avoid the possibility of getting HIV is to abstain from having any form of sex.  If that isn’t going to be an option in your life then you need to take alternative measures which will at least reduce as much as possible your chances of contracting this deadly disease.

Do not have oral sex if you have cuts or open sores in your mouth or throat and especially don’t have oral sex if your mouth is bleeding or if there is blood on your partner’s genitalia. Do not, however, feel that you are safe if there is no bleeding and you have no cuts or sores in or around your mouth – because you are not.

The HIV virus can live in semen (cum) in pre-ejaculate semen, and in vaginal secretions.  The virus can be absorbed through the lining of your mouth regardless of whether or not there are open sores or cuts in your mouth.

If you are performing oral sex on a male insist that a condom be worn.  A condom will not offer 100% protection against the spread of HIV during oral sex, but a condom is your best line of defense (other than abstinence).

A condom works both ways.  A condom protects the person performing oral sex from coming in contact with the HIV virus through oral pre-ejaculate semen or with the semen itself.  The condom also protects the male from HIV entering his body through the opening in the tip of the penis.

If you are performing oral sex on a female, use a barrier, such as a natural latex sheet, a dental damn, or even a condom which has been cut open so it forms a square.  A small sheet of plastic food wrap could also be used.  The idea is to prevent vaginal fluids from entering the mouth where they can be absorbed by the lining of the mouth.

Again, this is a two-way street.  The barrier protects the person perform oral sex from getting vaginal fluids orally, and it prevents the HIV virus from the person perform the act from entering the woman’s body through the lining of the vagina or the cervix.

The same precautions need to be taken if performing oral sex anally. A latex sheet, a dental damn, a condom cut open so it forms a flat square or a small sheet of plastic food wrap needs to be in place between the person perform the oral sex and the person receiving it.

HIV is a serious disease.  There is no known cure at the present time.  Don’t risk your life based on faulty information.  Always use protection, no matter what type of sexual encounter you have.
